Mustangs Out Run the Lobos, Levelland Drops Bi-District Championship 69-to-24 at Sweetwater

Its been a task just to keep a team on the field in 2020 not to mention put a team into the 4A-2 High School Football playoffs and while the Levelland Lobos managed the first two, the Sweetwater Mustangs simply outran the Lobos on Friday night in a 69-to-24 Bi-District Champion at Sweetwater.

The Mustangs opened the contest on a 66 yard, seven play drive capped off on a Cedrick Brown two yard touchdown run and with the PAT Sweetwater took a seven-to-nothing win with 10:41 to play in the front quarter.

Levelland answered and quickly as Senior Isaiah Salazar took the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to the house and while the PAT failed Levelland was on the board trailing seven-to-six with 10:28 left in the front frame.

Sweetwater responded as Leo Holsey tossed a 35 yard touchdown pass to Darian Carr and put the lead to Sweetwater 14, Levelland 6 with 9:55 to play in the first frame.

Levelland went four and punt the Mustangs went at it again.

62 yards over 14 plays and a three yard Leo Holsey touchdown run gave the Mustangs a 21-to-six lead with 3:16 still remaining in quarter one.

Levelland again would punt it away and the Sweetwater offense wasted no time. Leo Holsey would connect with Darian Carr from 84 yards out and with time gone in quarter one Sweetwater led 27-to-six.

The Lobo defensive got busy in the second.

The Mustangs would get three possessions in the third that ended in a Skyler Davis fumble recovery, a Jonathan Flores fumble recovery and a Mustang punt.

Levelland would cash one in late in the half as Dylan Bordayo scampered in from two yards out and while the PAT fail, Levelland cut the lead to Sweetwater 34, Levelland 12 with one minute to play in the front half.

Sweetwater recovered the score and quickly as Darian Carr would take the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for six points and Sweetwater led at the half 34-to-12.

Levelland started the second half in fine fashion as long kickoff return from Jason Ramirez set the Lobos up first-and-ten from the Sweetwater 30. One play and one score from their as Bryant White connected with Dylan Bordayo from 30 yards out cutting the lead to Sweetwater 34, Levelland 18. Oddly enough, Sweetwater would intercept the two point conversion pass and take it 108 yards for two points turning the lead to Sweetwater 36, Levelland 18 with 11:42 to play in the third quarter.

Sweetwater wasted no time getting their offense back out.

The Mustangs would cover 55 yards on three plays and Leo Hosley would rush in from two yards out. His second rushing touchdown put Sweetwater in front 43-to-18 with 10:19 left in the third.

Levelland would go four and punt and Holsey would strike again. The junior would race 25 yards to the house for his third rushing touchdown and Sweetwater grew the lead to 50-to-18 with 7:54 left in the third.

While it looked very bleak for the Lobos, the turnover bug bit the Mustangs.

Levelland would punt away their next possession and Sweetwater would muff the return. Jonathan Flores would grab his second fumble recovery of the game and Levelland was in business.

The Lobos only needed one play as Bryant White connected with Jason Ramirez from 17 yards out and the second Bryant White touchdown pass cut the lead to Sweetwater 50, Levelland 24 with 6:10 left in the third.

Sweetwater would fumble again on the following kickoff for their fourth turnover of the night but Levelland couldn’t get points on the drive and the Sweetwater offense put it out of reach.

Cedrick Brown would grab two more touchdown runs from 16 yards and five yards out while Kermarion Saddler would ad a 15 yard touchdown run putting the contest away with Sweetwater taking the 69-to-24 win.

Levelland put up 213 yards total offense with just one turnover on the night.

Bryant White would go 13-for-32 with 178 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Isaiah Salazar was the favorite target with five catches and 66 yards while Dylan Bordayo reeled in four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. Jason Ramirez grabbed two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown while Jonathan Hinojosa took and pair of catches for 15 yards.

Levelland would rush for 55 on the night with Isaiah Salazar on 14 carries for 41 yards and Bryant White adding four carries for 11 yards.

The Sweetwater offense was red hot putting up 754 total yards with 281 through the air and 473 on the ground.

Quarterback Leo Holsey did a ton of damage going 12-of-17 through the air for 281 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 200 yards on 11 carries and three scores.

The Levelland Lobos close the regular season at two-and-eight and the 2020 campaign at two-and-nine.

The Lobos say goodbye to seniors Jason Ramirez, Bryant White, Isaiah Salazar, Jonathan Flores, Dylan Bordayo, Skyler Davis, Reigan Vestal, Jordan Corrales, Jonathan Hinojosa, Brincet Barrera, Jagger Lopez, Paxton Wilson, Aalijah Soliz, Michael Bush, Jeremiah Garcia, Dylen Wolfe, and Alex Johnson.

Thanks to the senior class of 2021, all the Lobo football players, coach Andy Correll, the assistant coaches and fans for a fun 2020.
