Roughneck Defense Corrals the Steers in Bi-District Championship

The Sundown Roughneck defense corralled the Farwell Steers on Thursday as Sundown gave up just six points and 186 yards in a 34-to-six and are 2A-1 Region One Bi-District Champions.

Farwell would open the contest with a four-and-out and the Roughnek offense started their work.

Sundown would drive the ball 81 yards in 16 plays and take over seven minutes off the clock before Carson Holson would hit Carson Boggs from 10 yards out and Sundown took a seven-to-nothing lead with 2:49 to play in the opening quarter.

Farwell would answer as the Steers took a big kickoff return to the Sundown 33 and five plays later Leefe Actkinson hit Kolter Henderson from six yards out for the score. Farwell would miss the extra point but cut the lead to Sundown 7, Farwell 6 with eight seconds left in the first.

Little did anybody know at the time, that would be it.

Sundown responded drive 55 yards over 15 plays and getting a five yard touchdown run from EJ Hernandez with 7:34 to play in the half. The PAT would fail and Sundown led 13-to-six going to the halftime locker room.

Second half was all Roughnecks.

Sundown would score on their opening drive sending EJ Hernandez in for a second time. The three yard touchdown run and PAT put Sundown in front 20-to-six with 7:43 left in the third.

Farwell would go four and punt setting up another Roughneck scoring drive. Carson Holson would connect with Marcos Hernandez from 24 yards out and the second Holson touchdown pass coupled with another PAT put the Roughnecks up 27-to-six with 1:10 left in the third.

Sundown would kick the ball away and the Steers would fumble the kickoff. Sundown would jump on the fumble at the Farwell 17 and it was academic from their as Carson Holson rumbled in from four yards out and Sundown’s PAT put the Roughnecks in front 34-to-six with 11:54 left to play.

That would be plenty and the teams traded interceptions on the next possessions and after another Sundown defensive stop, the Roughnecks would burn the final five minutes of the contest and take the win 34-to-six.

Sundown would tack up 310 yards total offense as the ground game was right where it should be. EJ Hernandez rushed for 125 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns while quarterback Carson Holson added 18 carries for 74 yards and a score.

Passing was there when they needed it as Holson connected on nine-of-17 for 105 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Marcos Hernandez caught two balls for 32 yards and a score while Carson Boggs reeled in two catches for 19 yards and a touchdown. Branson Sanders added two catches for 16 yards in the win.

Sundown’s defense was the story as the Roughnecks held Farwell to 186 yards total and only 40 on the ground. Farwell converted just one-of-seven on third downs and just one-of-four on fourth down.

Sundown’s win moves the Roughnecks to nine-and-two on the year and sets up yet another matchup against the Hawley Bearcats.

The Bearcats are also nine-and-two on the season picking up an opening round playoff win over Goldthwaite 34-to-20.

It’s the third time in as many years the two will meet.

Sundown defeated Hawley 37-to-36 in overtime in the Area Round of 2018 and Hawley returned the favor in 2019 handing the Roughnecks a 21-to-20 loss in the Regional Semi-Finals.

Game time, day and location for the rematch of the rematch is yet to be set.
