Lobos Find Big Second Half and Take District Opener Over Borger 27-to-14

“I got on them a little bit at half,” said Levelland Lobo Coach Andy Correll and that speech must have worked as the Levelland Lobos scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the Borger Bulldogs 27-to-14 on Friday night. The win moves the Lobos to two-and-five on the year but one-and-oh in district play.

The first quarter was fairly uneventful until Borger send Camden Hernandez four yards to the house. Add a PAT and Borger led seven-to-nothing after one frame.

Levelland would answer the score early in the second as Bryant White hit Joel Pena on a 34-yard touchdown strike. The PAT would fail but Levelland narrowed the score to Borger 7, Levelland 6 with 10:58 left in the half.

The Bulldogs answered right back.

The Bulldogs would cover 77 yards on six plays as Cameron Chambers rumbled in from four yards out and with the PAT Borger led 14-to-six with 8:02 left in the half.

Levelland would drive late in the half and quickly covered 47 yards to set up a goal to go opportunity in the final ten seconds of the half. That drive died on a Lobo fumble and the lead was Borger’s 14-to-six at halftime.

The rest was all Levelland.

Borger would go four and punt on their opening drive and the Lobos took advantage.

64 yards over five plays and Bryant White finds Joel Pena for a second touchdown strike. The 39 yard hook up was attached to a failed PAT and Borger led 14-to-12 with 8:29 left in the third.

Borger would draw a roughing the passer penalty on the score and after the flag was assessed on the kick off, Levelland would jump on an onside kick at the Borger 32.

It only took four plays to take the lead as Bryant White tossed his third touchdown pass of the night hitting Jason Ramirez from 17 out. Levelland would go White to Caleb Salazar for the two point PAT and Levelland took the lead at 20-to-14 with 7:16 left in the third.

After both sides would go quietly over two possessions, the Lobos found the killing blow.

Levelland would force a Borger punt and Jason Ramirez would weave his way 73 yards to the house for the touchdown. Marco Gullien added the PAT and the lead grew to 27-to-14 with 10:08 left in the contest.

That was that as the Lobo defense allowed Borger only 14 plays and two first downs in the fourth quarter and Levelland rolled in for a 27-to-14 district opening win.

The Levelland Lobos would lean on the passing game as Bryant White connected on 16-of-38 through the air for 203 yards with three touchdowns and no picks.

Joel Pena reeled in six catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns while Jason Ramirez added six catches for 63 yards and a score. Dylan Bordayo caught three balls for nine yards and Caleb Salazar added two catches for 20 yards and a two point conversion.

While the Lobos put up 300 yards only 114 came on the ground. Skyler Davis rushed 15 times for 62 yards while Bryant White took six carries for 63 yards.

Borger would put up 252 yards total offense as Cameron Chambers rushed 25 times for 119 yards and a touchdown while Camden Hernandez rushed for 21 yards and a touchdown while throwing for 129 yards.

While the offensive production for Borger was limited, it was very limited in the back half as Borger picked up 206 yards in the first half and just 46 yards in the second half.

Levelland moves to two-and-five on the season and starts district at one-and-oh. Borger moves to oh-and-seven and opens district at oh-and-one.

The Lobos continue the season on Friday October 16th with a long road trip to Perryton to take on the Rangers. Perrtyon comes into the contest at one-and-four without a district game on the record.
