Levelland Tennis Drops District Opener, Splits Pair on Saturday

September 14, 2020

The Levelland Tennis Team was busy Friday and Saturday as the Levelland dropped their district opener to Snyder and split a pair out of district on Saturday.

Levelland lost their district opener to Snyder 15-to-four but according to Tennis Coach Jeffrey Braziel the loss still carried some bright spots. “We may have lost the match, but I feel like we learned a lot, found some things to work on, and areas we have already started improving. Felicia Vasquez and Elizabeth Corrales got two great wins in singles that Snyder wasn’t expecting to lose.”

Levelland returned to action on Saturday and beat the Pecos eagles 15-to-two sweeping the doubles round and all boys matches.

“The boys played great, came out swinging and just never took their foot off the gas,” said Coach Braziel. “I’m super proud of how our girls battled through adversity and came out stronger. We had one doubles team that had ever played together before. The two and three teams and the mixed doubles were completely new teams.” Levelland has a little injury issue early in the season and it forced some new players to step up. “We had two girls I had to call the night and say hey we need you to play tomorrow. They both came in Saturday and got big wins for us.”

The weekend continued as Levelland fell to a TAPPS state contender All Saints 14-to-five.

Levelland swept the girls doubles, while All Saints took all the boys doubles and taking the mixed rounds.

“All Saints has some great players and they are fighters, but we battled and played some of the best tennis we have played all year,” said Coach Braziel. “We are excited to take this match and grow from it.”

Felicia Vasquez and Elizabeth Corrales both went four-and-oh on Saturday while Delaney Peck went three-and-one. While Levelland went one-and-one on Saturday, Coach Braziel noted that no player played any less than .500 over the weekend and noted that Soo Jin Park, Hayley Peredez, and Nadia Perez all stepped up due to other players being out and combined for a six-and-one effort over the weekend.

“I’m super proud of the team today (Saturday), we would have loved to have gotten two wins, but the growth we saw top to bottom is something to be excited about.”

Levelland is back in action on Tuesday at Seminole for their second district match of the year. Tuesday’s action is Varsity tennis while Junior Varsity Tennis will be played with Seminole in Levelland on Thursday.
