Back to Sports Means Back to the Classroom at Levelland ISD

July 29, 2020

loboloyaltyLike many other schools across the south plains, Levelland ISD has announced that in order to participate in sports for the 2020-21 campaigns, students will need to be in class in person.

Levelland ISD recently released their back to school plans for 2020 and while the University Interscholastic League has granted schools and students some leeway in the rules, Levelland ISD is having none of it.

According to the document from Levelland ISD Superintendent Jeff Northern:

Although UIL guidance allows students to participate in extracurricular activities in a virtual format, students who choose to participate in athletics, extracurricular activities, student activity groups and specific Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses must choose the in-person option. These include:

All UIL Activities
Athletics, including Cheerleading
Band
Choir
UIL Academics
Art (Competitions)
One-Act Play
Construction Technology (LMS)
Ag Metal Fabrication (LHS)
Construction & Architecture (LHS)
FFA
Health Sciences (Practicum)
Culinary Arts
Student Activity Groups (Student Council, etc.)
Destination Imagination
GEAR and Robotics
Any other courses/activities in which administrators deem appropriate

Several area schools have followed suit including Lubbock Cooper, Frenship and others.

The UIL has announced 1A through 4A schools can start athletics on schedule with volleyball and football practices allow to start August 3rd.  Volleyball matches can open August 10th with tennis and cross country opening on August 17th and football opening August 27th.
