Loboettes Take Third at Shallowater, Go Five-and-Two in Tournament Play

Loboettes Shallowater TournamentThe Levelland Loboettes traveled to Shallowater Tournament over the weekend and managed a five-and-two run that was good for third place in the crowded field.

With wins over Amarillo River Road and Idalou in pool play and a loss to Graham, the Loboettes managed to stay in contention for the Gold Bracket on Saturday.

Levelland started the day with a 28-26, and 26-24 win over the Denver City Fillies.  Levelland was out killed in the match 20-to-19 but managed four blocks and five ace serves in the win.  Kazzi Spears and Michaela Watkins paced the Loboettes with six kills each while Annie Dewbre collected three blocks and Watkins collected seven service points with an ace and Jordan Campbell added six points and two aces.

The win bumped the Loboettes in the Gold Bracket quarterfinals where they would meet district foe the Lamesa and hand the Golden Tornadoes a 25-21, 25-23 loss.  Levelland out killed Lamesa 19-to-15 and won the block column three-to-nothing.  Kazzi Spears racked up eight kills while Michaela Watkins added six.  Illiyana Gonzalez, Annie Dewbre, and Kaylee McCarter collected a block each while Watkins served for seven points on two aces.  Jordan Campbell and Kriston Montgomery added six points each in the win.

The Lamesa win moved the Loboettes into the Championship Semi-Finals against the Andrews Lady Mustangs, and after a long weekend of volleyball, the Loboettes finally stumbled in 25-21, 25-23 loss.  Levelland loss the kill column 16-to-13 and the block column six-to-three.  Annie Dewbre led the way with three kills and three blocks while Michaela Watkins and Kaylee McCarter severed for four points and an ace each in the the loss.

While the loss dropped the Loboettes into the Consolation Game, it also gave the opportunity to show off some resilience as they had 12 minutes between the Andrews loss and the start of a contest with Amarillo Highland Park.

Resilient they certainly were as the Loboettes closed out the tournament with a 25-22, 25-15 win over the Lady Hornets to take third in the crowded field.  Levelland out killed Highland Park 19-to-16 and out-blocked the Lady Hornets five-to-nothing.  They would also hang eight aces in just two games.  Nearly everyone found the kill column with Annie Dewbre leading the way on five kills and a block but Kaylee McCarter, Kazzie Spears, Michaela Watkins, and Illyanna Gonzales all collected three kills each and one block each.  Kazzie Spears, Annie Dewbre and Kaylee McCarter would combine for 23 service points and seven aces while Kriston Montgomery added five points on two aces in the win.

Overall, the Levelland Loboettes when five-and-two in the solid Shallowater Tournament field and while taking third place, they run their record to six-and-two overall.

The Loboettes return to the court in the their first home game of 2019 when Lubbock Monterey comes to call Tuesday night.  Freshman and Junior Varsity are both scheduled for 5:00pm starts with the Varsity set for 6:00pm.
