Loboettes Win Playoff Opener Over Dumas 49-to-24, Coach Clay Barnett Picks Up 400th Career Win

February 12, 2019

IMG_20190211_191213309.jpg“To get to 400 career wins you have to coach a lot of years and get lucky enough to coach a lot of good kids,” said Loboette Coach Clay Barnett after picking up his 400th career win on Monday night. It just so happened that it was a 49-to-24 win over Dumas for #2 Levelland and a Bi-District Championship for the Loboettes.

Dumas attempted to play the stall game all night and while it kept the Demonettes close at times, the #2 Levelland Loboettes led wire-to-wire.

Levelland started on a six-to-nothing run but Macie Medrando would hit a pair of threes late in the frame to leave the game tied at 10-to-10 after one.

That as they say was that.

The Levelland defense kicked in and behind five points from Natalie Velardez, the Loboettes sparked a 11-to-two run to build a 23-to-14 lead at the half.

The third quarter went by quietly with Levelland winning the frame seven-to-six and take a 30-to-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

Levelland then found the gas.

Miranda Villegas, Cami Garza and Josie Castillo would all hit threes in the fourth and with a 19-to-four run to close the contest Levelland won going away 49-to-24. The win clinches a Bi-District Championship for the Loboettes, moves their record to 29-and-three and Coach Clay Barnett would win his 400th career win.

Levelland got 12 from MaKayla Escue, 11 from Natalie Velardez and ten from Miranda Villegas. Kiahra Graves scored a solid eight while Josie Castillo and Cami Garza scored three each and Allie Latham chipped in two in the win.

Only four Dumas Demonettes scored and nobody found double figures as Courtnee Mild led the scoring with seven.

Levelland hit 19-of-32 from the floor at 59% while connecting on five-of-11 from behind the three point arch.

Levelland would also force 17 turnovers on the Demonettes that turned into 14 Loboette points.

“To get to 400 career wins you have to coach a lot of years and get lucky enough to coach a lot of good kids,” said Loboette Coach Clay Barnett after collecting his 400th career win. “That certainly includes several groups here at Levelland.

The win moves Levelland to 29-and-three on the year and advances the Loboettes to the 4A Area Championships with the time, location and opponent to be announce.
