Lobos Blow Out Golden Tornadoes, Levelland Closes Regular Season 17-and-12 and Awaits Playoff Seed

February 9, 2019

LoboBasketball 2018 19The Levelland Lobos went into their final regular season game of the season with an opportunity to win and pickup at least a share of second place in the district.  The opportunity didn’t get wasted as the Lobos blew out the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes in Lamesa 72-to-42 to close the regular season 17-and-12 and the district at five-and-three.

Levelland got a hot start on both ends allowing Lamesa just three first quarter points while Reid O’Connor poured in seven and Bryant White and Jakeevian Ford hit for five each.  Levelland led 19-to-three after eight minutes and never looked back.

Lamesa went to the offensive glass in the second and jump started their offense with seven of their nine points coming off the put back, but, in the same frame, got threes from Caleb Reyna and Zaiden LeCroy off the bench and coupled with four more from Bryant White, Levelland stretch the lead to 35-to-12 at the half.

Lamesa scoring got better yet in the third as Kalil Smiley dropped in eight and led the Golden Tonadoes to 17 third quarter points.  Levelland didn’t mind too much as Bryant White would pour in seven more and Caleb Reyna would hit his second three of the game to add 18 for the Lobos.

The fourth quarter was academic as Isaiah Salazar poured down 11 in the final eight minutes to complete the Lobo rout 72-to-42.

The win closes the regular season for the Lobos at 17-and-12 overall, five-and-three in district play and at least a share of a second place seed.

Lamesa slips to one-and-six on the loss and into a fifth place tie with Hereford with one game to play.

Levelland put four in double figures and nearly everyone into the score book.  Bryant White paced the Lobos with a career high 16 while Isaiah Salazar, Jakeevian Ford and Reid O’Connor knocked down 13 each.  Caleb Reyna tossed in eight off the bench while Zaiden LeCroy added five and Broderick Golightly and Bryan Gonzales added two each in the win.

Lamesa put two in double figures as Kalil Smiley led all scorers with 17 and Jackson Napper dumped in 12 but the balance of the Lamesa lineup scored 10 points combined in the loss.

Levelland did a lot of things well on the road.

The Lobos hit 28-of-52 from the floor at 54% while connecting on seven-of-17 behind the arch at 41%.

Couple that with 33 Lamesa turnovers that led to 26 Levelland points and the Lobos ran away with it.

Lamesa slides into a fifth place tie with Hereford at one-and-six on the year and would have to win at Canyon or have Hereford lose at Lubbock Estacado to get at least a tie for fourth place and the remaining playoff spot.

Levelland closes district play at five-and-three and a half game in front of Canyon for second place.

If Canyon would to Lamesa, Levelland would take second place outright but if Canyon were to win at home, that would create a tie for second.

Bi-District Championship basketball for all fields open on Monday the 18th.
