Lobo Basketball Coach Jeff Bontrager Announces His Retirement

April 6, 2018

IMG_20180117_051719At the end of the 2017-18 school season, one of the most familiar faces in Levelland athletics will hang it up as Lobo Basketball Coach Jeff Bontrager has announced his retirement from the Texas Public School Educational system effective at the end of the school year.

Bontrager, orginally from Maconaquah High School in Bunker Hill Indiana, came to Texas after his first four years of college at the University of Indianapolis where he play college football for the Greyhounds.

Bontrager came to Texas via Southern Methodist University for his undergrad work and after graduation stepped away from the coaching field for a five year stint working in the health club field.

His first job teaching and coaching came at Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving Texas as he started his coaching career as the Defensive Coordinator for the high school and served as junior high boys basketball and baseball coach.

“That is when I really found my love for basketball again,” said Bontrager.

After serving as basketball coach at Cistercian for two seasons he decided it was time for a move into the public school system.

“I really wanted to get back to the small town living,” said Bontrager. “West Texas reminded me more of home back in Indiana. The farmers, the small towns, the super friendly people was what I missed the most about the rural areas.”

Bontrager served as the head basketball coach at Crosbyton for eight years and spent five years in Vernon before landing his longest coach stint, head coach of the Levelland Lobos for nine seasons.

In Levelland Bontrager would find his 300th and 400th career wins along with several playoff berths, and the 2016 4A Region One Championship.

“I don’t what’s next,” said Coach Bontrager. “I know there are a lot of things and maybe some other careers paths I would like to explorer.”

Coach Bontrager says he truly does not what is next but “Its exciting and scarey at the same time to have a future that’s wide opne for me.”

Coach Bontrager celebrates retirement with his wife Tina and two sons, both former Lobo athletes. Lucas Bontrager is studying in the field of coaching while younger brother Dillon is in college to become a pilot.

Whatever comes next Coach Bontrager left is basketball team with this, “I’ll always be your coach. I may not directly be in charge of your day to day program but I will be checking up on you, following you and hope to hear from you as I will always be your coach just like any athlete I have every coached. I will always be there for you as your coach.”

A huge thanks to Coach Jeff Bontrager for some fantastic memories and seasons with Levelland Lobo Basketball and as a great teacher at Levelland High School.
