South Plains meets Ranger College 3 p.m. Wednesday in opening round of Region V Tournament in Frenship

SPCLEVELLAND — With the regular season in the books, the South Plains College men’s basketball team will open postseason play on Wednesday, March 7 against Ranger College at 3 p.m. at the Region V men’s basketball tournament at Frenship High School.

With an overall record of 20-8, South Plains enters the contest as winners of four of their last five and are 12-4 away from the Texan Dome this season. Led by sophomore Jordan Brangers, who leads the Texans with 15.5 points per game, South Plains will look to slow down the Rangers’ offense which is averaging 88 points per game.

Brangers is joined by 6-foot-6 swingman Deshawn Corprew who is shooting 46.7 percent on the year and is second on the team with 11.8 points per game. Sophomore big man Isaiah Maurice is shooting nearly 60 percent from the field on the year, averaging 10.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for the orange and blue.

Sitting at 22-8 on the season, Ranger has dropped three of its last five but ended conference play with wins over Weatherford and Southwestern Christian College to close out league play. Shooting 50.3 percent on the year, the Rangers are led by freshman Akiem Daschner who leads the team with 17.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Sophomores Caleb Smith and Jabri McCall each average over 12 points per game as the Rangers have eclipsed the century mark in scoring seven teams this season.

Should the Texans come out victorious, they will await a matchup with either Clarendon, the No. 4 seed out of the West, or McLennan, the No. 1 seed out of the North, at 1 p.m. on Friday. Clarendon and McLennan will tip at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
