February 25, 2018

SPCRodeo2018ODESSA — The South Plains College women’s rodeo team extended its lead in the regional standings over the weekend, capturing the women’s team title at the Odessa College Rodeo at the Ector County Coliseum.

Sophomore Lariat Larner won the women’s all-around title with 160 points thanks to a pair of top-five finishes as the Lady Texans tallied 410 points. Tarleton State, who came in ranked second in the region, finished sixth with 108.33 points. The Lady Texans rank first in the regional standings with 1,381 points, while Tarleton State is second with 971 points.

“Both of our teams have been working extremely hard and I was really pleased with the outcome of this weekend,” South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. “It’s always good to get a win, but to win by such a large margin and extend your lead by nearly 400 points is always a positive. We compete in one of the toughest regions in the country, so we will take all the help we can get.”

Sophomore Jenna Dallyn racked up 155 points in goat tying as she posted a time of 7.1 in the long round followed by a 6.9 in the finals to capture the event title. Larner tallied 60 points in goat tying as ran a 6.5 in the long round and a 9.9 in short round, placing fifth for the Lady Texans.

Kashley Seitz added to the Lady Texans’ point total with 95 points in the breakaway roping event. Seitz posted a 2.8 in the long round which she followed up with a 3.2 in the finals to earn a fourth place overall finish. Larner would earn her second top-five finish in breakaway roping, running a 2.5 in the long round and a 3.8 in the finals, racking up 100 points as she placed third overall.

The Texans rode their way to a sixth-place finish over the weekend, adding 180 points to their season total. South Plains’ Chet Boren and Hadley Cloward placed second in team roping as they ran a 5.9 in the long round and 20.7 in the short to finish with 130 points. Sophomore Zack Kirkpatrick teamed up with Texas Tech’s Kade Cotton in team roping as the duo ran a 7.2 in the long round and missed in the short round as Kirkpatrick tallied 50 points for South Plains.

“Lariat had a great weekend winning the women’s all-around title, and with Avery going down, it’s nice to have some people stepping in somewhat to fill that void,” Doster said. “Jenna had a good weekend and our team ropers did well, so, all in all, I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish and we need to keep working hard and improve each week.”

South Plains will return to action on March 22 in Sweetwater at the Ranger College Rodeo, followed by a trip to Snyder on April 5 for the Western Texas College Rodeo.
