O’Connor’s 27 Help the Lobos Sneak by the Panthers 56-to-54, Levelland Advances to Regional Quarterfinals

LobosAreaChampionship“I know it’s late in the season,” said Levelland Assistant Coach Jordan Elam, “but Reid (O’Connor) really had a coming out party tonight. He is very capable of being that kind of a player.” The reference was from the Levelland Junior blowing up for 27 points to help the Levelland Lobos to a 56-to-54 win over the Fort Stockton Panthers and propel them to the 4A Region One Quarterfinals.

The Lobos wasted no time getting going as O’Connor hit two threes and Isaiah Salazar added another to set the Lobos up on an 11-to-seven lead after one quarter.

Fort Stockton would answer right back.

The Panthers would get seven from the free throw line in the second quarter for a 13-to-nine run and retie the game at 20 all at the half.

Levelland surged right back in the third.

Reid O’Connor added nine more while Jakeevian Ford and Isaiah Salazar added five each and the Lobos had the lead rebuilt to 40-to-33 after three quarters.

Levelland would hold the seven point lead all the way to the two minute mark in the fourth before the Panthers made their run.

The Panthers would begin trading fouls for points and while the Lobos managed a four-of-nine effort from the free throw line, Fort Stockton would get threes from Andric Herrera and Jacob Whistler and climbed back within two points will ten seconds left.

The Panthers would come down floor with a chance to tie or win but Jacob Ramirez would pick the pocket of Andric Herrera in the half court and the turnover would seal the win for Levelland 56-to-54.

Levelland would get an outstanding night from Reid O’Connor as the junior hit five threes on his way to a 27 point night. Jakeevian Ford hit a pair of threes on his way to 12 and Isaiah Salazar added ten with two threes on the night. Joel White chipped in four and Broderick Golightly added three in the win.

Only three Panthers scored in the loss but all three scored in double figures. Casey Nolan led the way with 22 while Andric Herrera tossed in 17 and Jacob Whistler added 16 in the loss.

Levelland struggled mightly from the free throw line but made up the difference behind the arch.

The Lobos connected on just nine-of-25 from behind the free throw line but hit on nine-of-19 from behind the arch.

Fort Stockton hit from 14-of-18 from the free throw line but connected on just three-of-nine from behind the arch.

The Levelland Lobos move to 22-and-ten on the year and sit in wait for their 4A Regional Quarterfinal opponet as they will play the winner of the Seminole and Clint game.

That game will likey be played on Tuesday next week.
