Levelland Lobos Break Out the D at Denver City and Punch Ticket for the 4A Playoff Field

February 10, 2018

LobosThe Levelland Lobos only needed to one thing to get into the playoffs for 2018 and that was to win at Denver City on Friday night. They did just that behind a stellar defensive performance that netted the Lobos a 60-to-36 win and a playoff spot for 2018.

The defense was spot on, period.

Jakeevian Ford jump started the Lobos with three threes in the first eight minutes and coupled with four points from Reid O’Connor, the Levelland Lobos hung a 17 in the front frame. They did that while holding Denver City to just three field goals for a 17-to-six lead after one.

Denver City would win the second nine-to-seven as the Lobo offense slumped a bit but Levelland maintained a 24-to-15 lead at half.

The third quarter was a different story.

Joel White scored six while Isaiah Salazar scored five, and Broderick Golightly tossed in five. The offensive onslaught led the Lobos to a 22-to-12 third quarter and the 46-to-27 lead after three grew to plus 20 in the fourth and Levelland cruised in for the 60-to-36 win.

Every Lobo scored in the contest. Isaiah Salazar finished with 12 while Jakeevian Ford tossed in 11, Reid O’Connor scored nine and Broderick Golightly and Joel White scored eight each. Jacob Ramirez, Straton Dobson, Keyshawn Joyce, Michael Estrada and Connor Barnett scored two each while Kaleb Reyna added one in the win.

While Levelland shot almost 50% from the floor, hitting 24-of-50 from the field, they gave up just nine turnovers and none in the first 11 minutes of the contest.

Denver City managed just 14-of-47 from the floor with 15 turnovers in the contest.

“Every win is a team win if you consider that everyone works hard in practice but this is different,” said Lobo Coach Jeff Bontrager. “This is truly a team win. We got contributions from everybody in some form. Offense, defense, rebounding, everyone brought something.”

The Denver City Mustangs move to oh-and-nine on the district and will have one more opportunity for a 4A win as they host Lamesa in a non-playoff team finale on Tuesday night. Lamesa comes in two-and-seven in district play.

The Levelland Lobos move to 21-and-nine on the year and five-and-four in the district with one game to go as they host Lubbock Estacado for Senior Night on Tuesday.

If the Lobos win, or Brownfield would lose hosting Seminole, the Lobos would take third in the district field for 2018.

Basketball is all set for Gano Tubb Gymnasium on Tuesday night as the Freshman tip at 5:00pm, the Junior Varsity at 6:30pm and the Varsity at 8:00pm.

The game will be broadcast on the KLVT website only as conflicts with playoff basketball creates the move.
