Lady Texans stumble against Howard 63-56 Thursday at the Texan Dome

February 9, 2018

SPCLEVELLAND — The South Plains College women’s basketball team fell to Howard College 63-56 Thursday night at the Texan Dome as Howard’s Kendall Alsup led all scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds.

With the win, Howard improves to 14-12 on the year and 4-6 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. South Plains falls to 15-11 on the season and 2-8 in the WJCAC, as they will look to get back in the win column on Feb. 15 when they host No. 5 New Mexico Junior College at 5:45 p.m. at the Texan Dome on Hockley County Schools Employee Credit Union night.

“I thought our effort towards the end of the game was as good as it could be, and our girls competed, but when you have to dig back from a 17-point deficit, it’s very difficult,” South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. “When our defense is playing hard and competing, our offense seems to be a little more effective. When we come out flat and give up buckets, you go do down and have empty possessions.”

Down 53-36 after three quarters, freshman Gabbie Green brought South Plains back within 11 with a pair of free throws with 3:30 left. Mikayla Kuehne would cap a 14-5 run from the Lady Texans with a 3 from the top of the key to bring South Plains with nine with 2:39 to play. Kuehne would then sink a pair of free throws with 2:05 left to trim the lead to 59-52.

South Plains got within six when Kuehne hit a floater with 38 ticks left, but Howard fought off the Lady Texans’ full-court press in the final seconds to escape with the win. Howard’s Kaki Simpson netted 17 points, knocking down 6 of 11 attempts from the floor over 39 minutes. Corbyn Cunningham chipped in 14 points and hauled in eight rebounds for the Lady Hawks while Allison Taylor poured in six and Addyson Moseley finish with five.

Kuehne ended the night 6 of 17 from the field as South Plains shot 35 percent from the floor and were just 2 of 14 from the 3-point line. Freshman La’Praisjah Johnson netted 13 points to go along with four boards and five assists for the Lady Texans while Green tallied seven and Christina Baker finished with six.
