Lady Texans Win Two More Over the Weekend

CLARENDON — The No. 16 South Plains College women’s basketball team improved to 4-1 on Friday with a 77-39 win over SWCID at the Bulldog Gymnasium.

Mikayla Kuehne led all scorers with 15 points, knocking down five 3s in the contest, three of which came in the second half. South Plains’ Alexis Popham finished with 14 points and Mckenzie Taylor and Haleigh Hill each had 10. Gabbie Green bucketed nine points for the Lady Texans while La’Praisjah Johnson finished with eight.

South Plains used a 30-point third quarter to jump out to a commanding lead before scoring 24 in the final stint. Kuehne scored nine of her game-high 15 in the second half including a trio of 3-pointers. Taylor and Johnson scored a combined 18 in the back half of the contest as the Lady Texans picked up their fourth win in as many games.

“We had a solid day for playing our fifth game in eight days,” South Plains College head coach Cayla Petree said. “We balanced our minutes and our scoring to pick up another great team win.”

South Plains will look to push its win streak to five when they take on Seminole State on Saturday at noon in Clarendon.

CLARENDON — The No.16-ranked South Plains College women’s basketball team picked up their fifth win in as many games to improve to 5-1 on the year with a 59-44 drumming of Seminole State on Saturday at the Bulldog Gymnasium.

Freshman Gabbie Green led all scorers with 15 points, 10 of which came in the final two quarters. Lubbock native Chelsea Hunter pitched in with 13 points while Mikayla Kuehne bucketed eight points including six in the third quarter. Christina Baker and McKenzie Taylor each had five points while Chantel Govan and La’Praisjah Johnson each had four.

South Plains used a 13-3 run to open the contest and went on to lead 24-17 at the half. The Lady Texans used a 24 point third quarter to extend their lead to 48-24 heading into the fourth. South Plains hit four 3s in the final 20 minutes as six different players would score in the second half.

“For such a young team, we have shown a lot of toughness and poise playing six games in nine days,” South Plains College head coach Cayla Petree said. “Four of those have been on the road, so I’m extremely pleased to come out with these wins while our team continues to adjust to college basketball and grow as a team.”

The Lady Texans will return to the hardwood on Thursday when they host SWCID at 6:00 p.m. at the Texan Dome.
