September 9, 2017

The Levelland Lobos failed to convert on three fourth down conversions on Friday night and the missed conversions, Levelland fell to a solid Shallowater Mustang team 35-to-20 and move to one-and-one for 2017.

Shallowater took the opening drive for points as they marched 65 yards on 12 plays. Cutter Sparks would hit Koby Wood from 11 yards out and with a failed PAT Shallowater led Levelland six-to-nothing with 7:34 to go in the front quarter.

Levelland would answer the bell as the assembled an 18 play drive covering 80 yards. It led to a three yard touchdown run from Tristan VanZandt. The PAT followed and Levelland was in front seven-to-six with 11:22 left in the front half.

Shallowater answered right back.

The Mustangs rolled 65 yards on five plays and Sparks would hit Brody Hendrick from 34 yards out. Sparks would connect with Wood on a two point conversion and led 14-to-seven with 9:08 left in the half.

Levelland would begin to march again but the drive would stall out on a failed fourth down conversion and Shallowater cashed in on the opportunity.

Shallowater covered 73 yards on 11 plays before Cutter Sparks would find his first rushing touchdown of the night. The two ran plunge along with a PAT put Shallowater in front 21-to-seven at the half.

Levelland opened the second half on their second long scoring drive of the night.

Levelland covered 73 yards on 10 plays and Chris Gerber would sprint in from five yards out. Add the PAT and Levelland narrowed the lead to Shallowater 21, Levelland 14 with 8:01 left in the third.

Shallowater answered with yet another scoring drive and why not more Cutter Sparks.

The Mustangs covered 56 yards on five plays before Cutter Sparks would collect his second touchdown run. The one yard touchdown run plus the PAT put Shallowater in front 28-to-14 with 6:07 left in the third.

Levelland, needing momentum, would put together a short drive but would fail on their second fourth down conversion of the night.

Shallowater again cashed in.

Two plays, 44 yards, and a third Cutter Sparks touchdown pass. Koby Wood would catch his second touchdown pass and Shallowater pulled in front 35-to-14 with 4:02 to play in the third.

That would be all the Mustangs would need.

Levelland would grab one more score late in the game as Chris Gerber scored his second rushing touchdown of the night. The one yard touchdown run came with 1:50 left in the fourth and narrowed the score to Shallowater 35, Levelland 20.

That would be as close as it would get as Levelland would fail on an onside kick attempt and the Mustangs ran out the clock for the 35-to-20 win.

Chris Gerber would rush for 99 yards on 20 carries with two rushing touchdowns. He would also connect for 203 through the air completing 22-of-35 on the night.

Oddly enough Shallowater collected 384 yards total offense.

Shallowater rushed for 277 yards as Cutter Sparks went for 98 yards on 15 carries. Zack Aragon added nine carries for 71 yards and Brody Hendrick added 58 yards on 13 carries.

“Our effort was there,” said Lobo coach Curtis Lowery after the game.  “I didn’t call the best plays on some of those fourth down conversions we needed and that is on me.”

“We will go to the film tomorrow and we will learn from this loss.  In a non-district game, this is not a loss, it’s a learn and their is nothing we saw tonight that can’t be fixed.”

The Levelland Lobos slip to one-and-one on the year with the loss and prepare to host the Andrews Mustangs on Friday.

Game time Friday night is set for 7:30pm with pregame 6:30pm on KLVT AM1230 and!
