Sundown Wins UIL Lone Star Cup

It certainly is nothing sort of a big achievement for Sundown ISD as the Roughnecks and Roughettes have won the 2016-2017 UIL 2A Lone Star Cup.

Honoring the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas, the UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications based on their team performance in district and state championships.

The winning schools in each classification will receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL.

Sundown tallied 72.67 points while Lindsay placed second place at 64 points and Mason finished third at 60.

Points are scored from state and area Marching Band, Tennis, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming and Diving, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track and Field, Academics, One Act Play, Softball, and Baseball.

According to a summary issued by Sundown Athletic Director Steve Smith, the Sundown ISD achievements for 2017-18 include the following:

State and Area Marching Band- Area Runners Up, Regional Champions, State Runners Up

Tennis- District Champions

Cross Country- District, Regional, and State Champions; Boys, and Girls

Football – Bi-District Champions and Area Finalist

Girls Basketball- District, Bi-District, Area, Reg. Qtr. Final Champions, Regional Semifinalist

Boys Basketball- District, B-district Champions, Area Finalist

Golf- District boys and girls champions

Track & Field- District, Area Champions Boys and Girls, Girls Regional Champions, Boys and Girls 5th place State

Academics- District, Regional Champions, State 5th place

Softball-bi-district Champions, Area Finalist

Baseball- Bi-district Champions, Area Finalist
