Isaac Vargas Wins Two Golds at the Area Meet and Seven Levelland Lobos Head to Regional Finals
Isaac Vargas did what he does on Thursday as the Levelland senior and defending state champion of the 4A 3200 Meter Run won the Area Track and Field Meet 3200 Meter Run and 1600 Meter Run while the Lobos advanced seven athletes to the 2017 4A Region One Championships.
Vargas wold win the 1600 Meter run in 4:36.87 and out ran Gerardo Tarango from Perryton by plus 20 seconds. His advantage was over a full minute in the 3200 Meter Run. Vargas turned in a time of 10:02.16 while Tarango ran second at 11:03.98.
Gold was also brought home by the Lobos 4×200 Meter Relay team. Cheaden Reyna, Jeff Elliot, Daniel Hurn and Mason Brogden turned in the top time at 1:30.69
Cheaden Reyna picked up a pair of silver medals as he took second in the 110 Meter Hurdles at 15.88 and second in the 300 Meter Hurdles at 41.38. Reyna also grabbed bronze in the Triple Jump at 43′ 8.00” and fourth in the Long Jump at 21′ 7.00”.
Daniel Hurn picked up a silver in the Triple Jump at 44′ 8.00” and bronze in the Long Jump at 22′ 4.00”.
Hiajomah Hudson added fourth in the Triple Jump while Rodrigo Ornelas added fourth in the 3200 Meter Run and Francisco Ornelas picked up fourth in the 1600 Meter Run.
The Lobos were in the hunt for team gold through the day but fell a bit short. The Bushland Falcons won the team honors with 130 points while Perryton took second at 122 points and Levelland came in third at 119 points.
For the Loboettes, Megan Latham just missed the cut line in the 800 Meter Run as she finished 5th and just out of the qualifying. M’Kenzi Campbell just missed the cut in the Shot Put at fifth place.
The 4A Region One Championships will be held on April 28th and 29th at Plains Capital Park, Lowrey Field in Lubbock hosted by Texas Tech University.
