April 20, 2017

Sundown Area TrackTo say the Sundown Roughnecks and Roughettes won the 2017 2A Area 5/6 Track and Field Championships would probably a gross understatement. Dominated is the word as the Sundown Roughnecks racked up 171 points and 27 qualifying entries and the Roughettes totaled 237 points and 25 qualifying entries.

In fact, when the 2017 2A Region One Track and Field Championships open on at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa on Friday April 28th, only three events will not include a Sundown participant, that being the Boys High Jump, Boys Pole Vault and Boys 110 Meter Hurdles.

The Sundown Roughettes took gold in seven events including Andrea Sanchez in the 3200 Meter Run and 1600 Meter run while Hannah Jenkins won the 800 Meter Run and Jenna Legan took the gold in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Haven Wisdom added a gold from the field winning the Triple Jump while the Roughettes took first in all three relays for the day.

Alyzah McGlasson took silver in the 3200 Meter Run with Alexi Vigil adding second in the 400 Meter Dash and second in the Girls Long Jump. Alexis Terry won silver in the 300 Meter Hurdles while Lynzee Keys added second in the Girls Pole Vault and Kierstyn Ellington took the silver in the Triple Jump.

The Sundown Roughnecks grabbed three individual golds plus a win in the 4×100 Relay. They added six silvers including the 4×200 and 4×400 relays. Toss in three bronze medals for good measure.

Steven Quintanilla won the 3200 Meter Run while Jose Perez added second and Matt Cisneros added the bronze in the two mile.

Quintanilla would also win the 800 Meter Run while Bryce Spencer took the gold in the Boys Discus.

Link Wilkes took silver in the Triple Jump, Ladd Wilkes grabbed silver in the 100 Meter Dash and Isaac Hernandez running down second place in the 200 Meter Dash.

It’s the fifth consecutive win in the area meet for the Sundown Roughettes while the Roughnecks are modest three time defending champions.

The Morton Indians will advance a couple of athletes as well. Manuel Acosta won the 1600 Meter Run and grabbed a fourth in the 800 and Johnny Soliz took second in the 400 Meters.

The Smyer Bobcats will send a contingency as well. Ramon Lopez won the 300 Meter Hurdles and took second in the 110 Meter Hurdles. Aries Cisneros took fourth in the Boys Pole Vault.
