#17 Levelland Lobos Survive a Scare from Denver City, Five-to-Four Win Clinches a Share of a District Title
The Denver City Mustangs gave the #17 Levelland Lobos a test on Tuesday night but a five-to-four win on Tuesday night. The win, coupled with a Lubbock Estacado loss, earns the Levelland Lobos at least a share of a district title.
Denver City got on the board in the first when Ivan Villareal would single, steal second and score on a RBI single from Luis Rodriguez. Denver City led one-to-nothing after a half of an inning.
That lead was short lived.
Zack Estrada opened the bottom of the frame reaching on a Denver City error. He would be forced out on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Tameron Duran setting the Lobos with one on and one out. After Nolbeto Pena flew out for the second out of the inning, the red hot Levelland offense struck. Nick Gerber blasted a RBI triple to deep center scoring Duran and Gerber would score moments later on a RBI single from Jacob Ochoa. Ochoa would score on a triple to center from Tyler Haywood and Levelland was in front three-to-one after one.
Both teams went quietly in the second but Levelland got back on the board in the third.
Levelland started what looked to be a big inning when Nolberto Pena would single to left but was thrown out at second trying to stretch the double. Nick Gerber got aboard when he was hit by a pitch but was promptly thrown out trying to steal second. It looked like an inning that would not be but Levelland still managed a run. Jacob Ochoa would reach on a Denver City error and after going to second on a passed ball he would score on a RBI single from Tanner Marrow and Levelland led four-to-one through three.
The Mustangs got on the board in the fifth and cut the lead in half. Michael Garcia would double and after stealing second, he scored on a Levelland throwing error and Denver City cut the lead to Levelland 4, Denver City 2 to the bottom of the fifth.
Levelland got the run right back.
Nick Gerber would again be hit by a pitch and this time would go to second on a ground ball and to third on a passed ball. That would set up a second RBI from Tanner Marrow as a sac fly to right pushed Gerber across and Levelland was in front five-to-two through five.
It was nearly not enough.
Denver City would get a one out single in the seventh from Michael Garica and a walk to Vega setting Denver City up with two one and one out. Garcia would score on a ground out from Ivan Villereal cutting the lead to five-to-three and prompting the Lobos to go to the bull pen for Nick Gerber. A passed ball would score Vega and cut the lead to Levelland 5, Denver City 4. Gerber would surrender a a single and a walk before putting the fire out. Gerber would go two-and-oh to Irving Mijares before throwing three straight strikes and retiring Mijares with the strike out looking and ending the contest with Levelland winning it five-to-four.
Levelland got five runs on seven hits with one error while Denver City got four runs on seven hits with three errors.
#17 Levelland moves their record to 24-and-three on the year and more importantly get to seven-and-one in district play with just two to go. Coupled with the loss from Lubbock Estacado the Levelland Lobos clinch a share of a district title and with another win the Lobos could clinch the district championship outright. They travel to Lamesa on Friday and to Seminole on Tuesday next week.
Denver City moves to three-and-five on the year and are now fighting for their playoff lives as they fall from the top four. They host Brownfield on Friday and Lubbock Estacado on Tuesday of next week.
